Friday Find: Santa with Disney Babies Musical Figurine

Every year when I put out my Christmas decorations, there are of course some very special pieces that brings reminds me of cherished memories. That is part of the point of Christmas decorating, right? Here is a special musical figurine that I bought when for my daughter's first Christmas (1996).

disneydaze.com

It is a very traditional musical figurine with a wind-up mechanism that plays a music box. Baby Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse go up and down on their teeter-totter while Santa looks on. The music box tune is "Here Comes Santa Claus."

I remember purchasing this at Disneyland. It is not a fancy musical figurine but there are a lot of years of special memories attached to it. Both my kids loved to just wind it up, listen to "Here Comes Santa Claus" and watch Baby Mickey and Minnie go up and down. Do you have any special Christmas decorations that reminds you of special memories?

Happy Friday!

Shop Disney: Character Socks

During the summer at Disneyland, there is no better place to seek refuge from the heat than all the fun stores at the Park. Here are some fun new character socks (adult size) that have been popping up.

There are also more shoes with a character theme that I've been seeing. Here is one that I saw at The Disney Vault 28 at Downtown Disney.

I was on the SHOP DISNEY PARKS app and saw more. It's never too early to start thinking of Christmas presents. Or just get some to add lots of character to your feet.

The Day Disney Dollars Died

As of May 15, 2015, Disney Dollars are no longer available at the Disney Parks. What began as idea from Disneyland Silhouette Artist, Harry Brice, who told Disneyland President, Jack Lindquist, about "Disney money," Disney Dollars was actual legal currency that was considered actual "cash" accepted at all Disney Parks, Disney Cruise Ships and Disney Stores. There was a lot of work that went into its design and production that included special printing plates to prevent counterfeit copies.

You could ask for special envelopes to protect your Disney money.

You could ask for special envelopes to protect your Disney money.

Disney Dollars were available in $1, $5, and $10 denominations. It was a one for one exchange, No additional fees. It cost $1 to buy a $1 Disney Dollar. You would purchase them to enhance your Disney Parks experience. Lots of people would purchase Disney Dollars to keep as a souvenir. Before Disney Gift Cards, some would purchase Disney Dollars to give as a gift. There were different designs to commemorate Disney company milestones like Mickey's birthday or big Disney Park anniversaries.

Last Thursday, May 12, 2016, it was hastily announced that Disney Dollars would no longer be available after Saturday, May 14, 2016. While they will still be accepted like "cash" at any Disney Parks, Disney Cruise Lines and Disney Stores,  they will no longer be available for purchase.

Disney Dollar designed for Mickey Mouse 80th Anniversary

I suspect that Disney Dollars was going through a slow death with decline of people simply not using cash. The rise of credit cards and electronic payments encourage people to not have to carry any kind of cash in their wallets. Disneyland began its 60th Celebration last year and there was no new Disney Dollar design for this big milestone. This announcement was not a big surprise as it just seems like it was coming. Disney Dollars are now just another chapter for the Disney Parks history.

There are plenty of Disney Dollar collectors out there who have collections to share or want to complete a particular Disney Dollar set. Disney Dollars remain available through eBay sellers. If you want to learn more about Disney Dollars, check out the video below or visit this unofficial website that can answer most of your Disney Dollar questions. They have some past designs to view, too.

Jack Lindquist receives much of the credit for the creation and marketing of Disney Dollars. Listen to Disney Avenue's interview with Lindquist and you can hear him talk about Disney Dollars (listen at around 42:00). Lindquist recently passed away this past February.

RIP Disney Dollars.

Shop Disney: Disney Parks Snowglobes

In the late 1990s, there was a huge selection of snow globes at Disneyland. I remember how popular they were by the amount of snow globes I rang up as a Main Street Merchandise Cast Member. There was a big variety of Disney themed snow globes that were available at both Disneyland and the Disney Stores, too. In the past several months, I have noticed some Disney snow globes popping up in the Disneyland stores.

The Disneyland Castle (Sleeping Beauty Castle) snow globe has a great decorative detail. It also plays "When You Wish Upon a Star."

There are also a couple of snow globes to commemorate the Disneyland 60th Celebration.

I found some smaller, plastic snow globes at the World of Disney store. These are geared more for kids and kind of remind you of the basic souvenir-style model.

There several different ones available online through the Disney Stores. The Bradford Exchange has some fun holiday and more Disney snow globes, too.  If you purchase a snow globe and have to travel, you can go HERE to find out about TSA guidelines when it comes to trying to get your Disney snow globe home:

Snow globes that appear to contain less than 3.4 ounces of liquid (approximately tennis ball size) can be packed in your carry-on bag ONLY if the entire snow globe, including the base, is able to fit into your one quart-sized, resealable plastic bag. Each passenger can only bring one quart-sized bag with 3.4oz or smaller containers. Larger snowglobes must be packed in checked baggage.
Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.

Snow globes are a fun way to remember your Disneyland trip and to always think of fond Disney memories. They make great gifts for any Disney fan.

Starbucks + Christmas + Disney Parks = Magical YOU ARE HERE Ornaments

Everyone always looks forward to new holiday merchandise from both Starbucks and Disney. This year, looks like they got together to offer these great co-branded items. They belong to with the Starbucks "You Are Here" collection.

 Disney Parks-Starbucks Mini Mug Ornaments

Here are some more photos of these fun ornaments so you can see what the front and back look like.

There are two more ornaments that represent the ceramic and acrylic Disney Parks - Starbucks tumblers.

I also discovered this very merry holiday mug. This looks like a generic Disney Parks - Starbucks Christmas mug that can be sold at all the Disney Parks Starbucks locations (Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios).

I am actually at Walt Disney World so it was just perfect timing that I was here to grab most of these for my collection. The ornaments are also a great souvenir of our family trip. It will be fun to put these up on our tree and remember some of the fun moments we had on our vacation this week.

There Disneyland and Disney California Adventure mini ornament mugs available, too. As well as a special Diamond Celebration mini tumbler ornament. Gotta get those when I get back.

Bring on the Merry!

Shop Disney: Star Wars Merch available at Disneyland

What happens when you have Disney in charge of the world of Star Wars that include Star Wars merchandise? You get a huge merchandise marketing campaign that began September 4th, 2015 that was dubbed Force Friday. Many participating brick and mortar retailers (Toys R Us, Target, DisneyParks) had midnight events, special freebies (Disney Stores), and plenty of new merchandise. Online retailers like Amazon also got into Force Friday. It was like Black Friday + Christmas all rolled into one day for many Star Wars fans.

I happened to be at Disneyland yesterday and decided to check out what kind of Star Wars merchandise was available. There was a midnight event at the World of Disney store at Downtown Disney. Although these displays look full, they apparently had a huge run on new light sabers, die cast cars and figures. New Star Wars toys is always a good thing.

The BB8 app controlled toy made by Sphero was definitely the big fan favorite. Those were easily gone by mid-afteroon. These are several of the toys that I also found interesting.

There were lots of new hats and apparel are readily available throughout select stores. A lot of these are Disney Parks exclusives so you'll only find it at one of the many Disneyland Parks. There are many different designs that will declare your loyalty to either the Dark Side or the Rebels. There are different designs for adults and children.

There was also some Star Wars jewelry and Stroomtrooper piggy bank so you can save money to buy more Star Wars merch.

There is actually some comic book and a book series that is available. Finally, there is a soft plush-like BB8 that would be perfect as a decorative piece on your bed. There was a small version, too. Either way, you could tell that BB8 is the new star.

disneydaze.com

There were special and open edition Star Wars pins available, too. A lot of those were gone very early.  I did buy some things that I thought my Star Wars fans (MacSparky and daughter #2) would enjoy. I am sure there is more that will come out before the big movie release in December.

Walking around both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure proved that the Force was strong. The Star Wars merch is definitely competing for space and dollars against the Frozen (Anna & Elsa) product line. I am sure they can live together since they are both part of the huge Disney family.

Silhouette Portrait = Best, Unique, Inexpensive Disneyland Souvenir

 photo from GrowingUpGoofy.com

photo from GrowingUpGoofy.com

The Silhouette Studio is located on Main Street, U.S.A. It is one of favorite stores at Disneyland. I think that one of the best, most unique, most personal and least expensive Disneyland souvenirs you can purchase is a silhouette. Here's why:

  1. It's personalized. It's your image.
  2. It's handcrafted by talented artists. They work super fast and attention to detail is amazing.
  3. The price is right. It's under $9.99 and an additional $16.95 for the frame.(Discounts only apply to frame. Don't discount on the artist & their work).
  4. You actually receive two (2) images of your silhouette.
  5. A treasured keepsake of your trip or to mark a special occasion.
  6. It's Disney art that you will proudly display in your home.

The first time I had a silhouette done was for my wedding program almost 22 years ago. Since you get two images, I saved one to frame and the other I used for my wedding program. Now I have this extra image in my scrapbook.

 Me & MacSparky c. 1993

Me & MacSparky c. 1993

I brought each of my kids to have their silhouette cut for their 1st, 5th, 10th and 15th birthdays. When my oldest graduated high school last year, I had her silhouette done and put them on her graduation party invitations and favors. You can get the silhouettes cut out individually or together. You can even have a select Disney character silhouette alongside yours.

From their silhouettes, I could see little details of my kids growing up. As a mom, I treasure how I can see their profiles when they were a baby, toddler and young adult through these images. Documenting their childhood through these artist silhouettes is priceless!

The artist themselves are amazing and dedicated. There are only a handful of them who work at the Silhouette Studio. Spend time talking to them as they are also a wealth of Disney information. A couple of them have been there many years.

Spend the extra to protect, preserve and show off you Disneyland silhouette. The frame has hidden Mickey's in the pattern. It completes the package and experience.

Plastic frame with hidden Mickey's is additional purchase but worth it.

Plastic frame with hidden Mickey's is additional purchase but worth it.

It's probably one of the most overlooked stores on Main Street, U.S.A. It is a tiny treasure that you should really check out. For me, having a Disneyland artist cut your silhouette is a great Disneyland experience and one of the best and most valuable souvenirs you can take home and put on your wall to enjoy. Every time you look at it, lots of memories will warm your heart, too.

Wishing you some Disney today!

Shop Disney: Disneyland Parks Personalized Leather Goods

disneydaze.com

I like it when there is themed merchandise that makes sense and is found in the proper Disneyland area. For example, in Frontierland, having leather goods goes with the theme of the area. It is something that you might buy in Frontierland as opposed to Tomorrowland. What makes it extra special is that you can have a Disneyland souvenir that you can personalize, too.

Over at the Pioneer Mercantile located near the entrance of Frontierland, you can find these fun leather accessories.

Note that the sign says "Free Engraving Available". It seems that it always depends on the Cast Member that day if they will allow nicknames or other pet names to be engraved. They will also engrave dates if you want to commemorate your visit or a special date.  The character selection is limited to Mickey, Minnie, the Princesses and Frozen (of course). They have some special Diamond 60th Celebration offerings, too.

There are some non-Disney leather bands available so if you are looking for a personalized gift, this is a good option. Remember, there is no extra charge for engraving.

Shop Disney: Haunted Mansion & Nightmare Before Christmas Playing Cards

Today I am going to start a new blog series, "SHOP DISNEY." One of my favorite things to do at Disneyland Parks is to stroll through the stores and see what is new and fun. I usually don't buy much unless I really need to have it, but I see many things that I know several of my Disney-loving friends would enjoy.

I came upon these playing cards. How cool is the packaging! The coffin shape is so perfect for The Haunted Mansion and The Nightmare Before Christmas

 Front of packaging.

Front of packaging.

I love the front design of the playing cards. It is both classic and iconic to The Haunted Mansion and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The back of the package shows you what the cards will actually look like.

I love these playing cards. I think they are the perfect gift or addition to anyone who loves The Haunted Mansion or The Nightmare Before Christmas. They are a good value as well. I am going to buy some and put them on handmade cards and scrapbook pages. I think they are the perfect embellishment.
