Music Mondays: What's This? (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
They're hanging mistletoe, they kiss
Why that looks so unique, inspired
They're gathering around to hear a story
Roasting chestnuts on a fire
The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in October 1993. Since then, it has grown a steady stream of loyal fans. It's a movie that mashes up two holidays (Halloween and Christmas) so it enjoys viewing throughout these two seasons. The music and lyrics were composed by Danny Elfman. The movie earned Elfman a 1994 Golden Globe nomination for original soundtrack.
One of the signature songs from this movie is "What's t This?" The main character, Jack Skellington, finds the seven holiday doors and stumbles into Christmas Town through a portal. As he is examining the happenings in Christmas Town, Jack sings this song to voice his curiosity of the activities that surround the Christmas holiday.
The sequence when this song is sung sets up the story. As the singing voice of Jack Skellington, Elfman lends his rich voice to create this memorable moment in the movie.
In 2006, Disney released a digital 3-D edition of the movie. A special edition soundtrack was released with a variety of artists performing covers of the musical numbers from the movie. Here is American rock band, Fall Out Boy, version of "What's This?"
This song for me is perfect for today since I am asking myself: "What's this? What's This? Christmas is almost here." It happens every year that all of a sudden, the big day is just a few sleeps away. I am going to channel some of Jack Skellington's initial excitement of discovering the Christmas holiday to enjoy these last couple days before Santa arrives.
Bring on the merry!
