Music Monday: Jolly Holiday
Van Dyke is well known for his portrayal of Bert, the chimney sweep, from Mary Poppins (1964). One of the songs he sings is "Jolly Holiday." It was written by Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman. It is a fun and playful song that Bert sings to Mary Poppins in the fantasy sequence of the movie. It is a sweet song that depicts a unique and long friendship between Bert and Mary.
Dick Van Dyke started off his 90th birthday celebration at Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe (Disneyland) where he was presented with a special silhouette of Bert. It now hangs inside the restaurant, too.
If you are in the Southern California area, PBS SoCal is airing a show, "Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime,” this coming Thursday, December 17 at 7pm. You'll have to consult your local cable channels to see exactly which channel to turn to. He penned a lot of songs from my childhood that are now Disney classics. Sherman songs have been covered by just about everyone, in many styles, and through many decades.
