Music Monday: Rainbow Connection
The Muppets are back...did you know that? They have a new prime time show that premiered last week. I think that it's great that they are back and more people are discovering who they are. But if you were a kid in the late 70's, you grew up with the The Muppets Show (!976-1981). You got to know them through though this variety show format. There were fun guests who come on to do skits and sing songs with The Muppets.
During this time period, The Muppet Movie came out in 1979. One of the famous songs that came out from this movie was Rainbow Connection. It is the opening scene for the movie and it is sung by Jim Henson.
It was written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher. The song received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and Best Original Score. It also garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. It also made its way onto the BIllboard charts in 1979. Rainbow Connection also remains on on the AFI's 100 Years, 100 Songs list of the top 100 songs in cinema. This post had some good 'behind-the-scene" notes about this particular song.
The song has become an anthem for many. Organizations and people relate to the lyrics and message of dreamers coming together. There have been many artist who have covered this pretty simple song from The Carpenters, Sarah MacLachian, to Justin Timberlake. I am looking forward to a new version by Gwen Stefani that is being released next month with the release of the We Love Disney CD.
