Music Monday: Out There (Hunchback of Notre Dame)
This past Friday, I had several friends attend a one man show at the Segerstrom Concert Hall that was billed as "A Whole New World of Alan Menken." Who wouldn't love to spend an evening hearing Disney Legend, Alan Menken, share some of his stories and songs with other Disney fans?
Menken is responsible for the soundtrack from the last several decades of Disney animated movies. This includes the music from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). While this movie is not as popular as others, I find that the songs from Hunchback are memorable. The lyrics (Stephen Schwartz) and music (Alan Menken) from Out There is one of songs that will make an impression. I think this clip of Menken addressing the score from this movie will make you smile.
The Hunchback Disney movie is based on the classic novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. In the movie, the song is sung by the character, Quasimodo, who has lived in isolation in the cathedral of Notre Dame. He sings the song, Out There, to express both his longing and fear of being able to go outside of his bell tower and participate in town events.
Strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there
Like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I'll be content
With my share
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent
I think the song is full of hope and has a pretty melody. Did you know that there is a Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame musical production?
